Street Food as the soul of Indian Cuisine – National Food Awards 2024

National Food Awards 2024
Street food culture is a big part of Indian life, but we often forget to appreciate the people who make it so. To recognize their talent and hard work, Discultured is excited to present the National Food Awards 2024, celebrating the people who make Indian food culture so special.

It may be a wild assumption but most of us love walking down one of those streets where the air is filled with the smell of sizzling spices and freshly fried snacks. You spot a pani puri stall, where the vendor quickly dunks crisp puris into spicy, tangy water, and hands them over to a long line of eager customers. Just a few steps away, you see someone serving up a hot plate of pav bhaji and you feel as if the buttery aroma is drawing you in. This is what makes Indian Street food so damn tempting, irresistible, and an absolute feast for the senses. We might not talk about it much but there’s more to it than just taste.

Street food in India is like a reflection of the region you’re in. Every city, every state has its own special dishes and flavors, shaped by local ingredients and traditions. Take Kolkata’s puchka, for example, with its sharp, tangy tamarind filling, or the soft banana fritters of Kerala, made with coconut oil. These foods aren’t just snacks; they tell the story of where they come from. Each dish carries a piece of the region’s culture, history, and way of life.

Affordable indulgence

But it’s not just about the variety and flavors. Street food in India is also about affordability and accessibility. For many, it’s a way to enjoy a quick, delicious meal without breaking the bank. In metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, where life moves fast and expenses can pile up, street food becomes a lifeline for people who are still figuring out their lives in the big cities. With meals often costing less than a cup of coffee, it’s an accessible option for those who can’t afford restaurant dining every day. Whether it’s a bowl of masala maggi at a roadside stall or a filling plate of rajma chawal, these small, humble dishes feed millions. Street food keeps the heartbeat of the city going, nourishing not just the body but also the spirit of Urban India.

But we often don’t give this street food culture the credit it truly deserves. In recent years, social media has brought street food into the spotlight, with videos showing vendors adding their unique twists to traditional dishes. You might have seen clips of people mixing unusual ingredients or creating over-the-top versions of everyday snacks. While some of these experiments may get trolled for being too eccentric, they highlight just how innovative and sometimes even crazy Indian street food can be.

The Innovative and sometimes crazy side of the Indian street food culture.

Social media has helped us see the quirky, experimental side of Indian food culture that we might not otherwise notice. Whether it’s a vendor adding chocolate to samosas or stuffing momos with unexpected fillings, these experiments show the crazy creativity found on the streets. Food bloggers play a huge role in making this happen. Through their content, they bring attention to these small food stalls, giving them the recognition they often miss out on.

While there’s no match for the authentic taste you get on the streets, you’ve probably noticed some restaurants trying to recreate the traditional street food experience in a more refined setting. Inspired by the explosion of food content on social media, these restaurants are adding their own innovative touches while staying true to the flavors that make street food so beloved. As a result, Indian food is getting more global love than ever. From fusion dishes in high-end restaurants to street-style snacks featured on international food blogs, the reach of Indian cuisine has expanded far beyond its origins.

Discultured is celebrating this culinary creativity at the National Food Awards 2024.

To recognize the efforts of both the food bloggers who bring these flavors to the world and the restaurants that creatively reinterpret them, we’ve introduced special categories for these creators and innovators at the National Food Awards 2024, an initiative by Discultured. This is your chance to be celebrated for your creativity, dedication, and contribution to the Indian food culture. Whether you’re a blogger reintroducing everyone to the essence of street food or a restaurant trying new approaches to their food, this award show is the perfect platform for you to get the recognition you deserve.
